Gary Hume
Gary Hume (born Kent, 1962) studied at Goldsmiths College of Art, London, 1985–88, emerging to become part of the Young British Artists group in the early 1990s. His work is characterized by a bright palette of flat colours, often using household gloss paints on polished aluminium panels with imagery drawn from popular contemporary culture in a manner recalling the Pop Art movements of the 60s and 70s. Hume refers to three main strands in his paintings as ‘flora, fauna and portraiture’.A major retrospective at Tate Britain (2013) confirmed Gary Hume’s status as one of Britain’s leading artists, with an international track record of more than two decades of exhibitions in London, Europe and the US, particularly in New York, where he is represented by the Matthew Marks Gallery.
