This photogravure etching, with hand-colouring in gouache, is based on For the Love of God, a sculpture by Damien Hirst produced in 2007. The original sculpture consisted of a platinum cast of an 18th-century human skull, which was then encrusted with 8,601 flawless diamonds, including the Skull Star Diamond, a pink, pear-shaped diamond embedded in the skull’s forehead. The skull’s teeth are human and were purchased by Hirst in London. Both the sculpture and print reflect Hirst’s obsession with mortality, a theme in art dating back to antiquity.
