Edition variable reduction woodcut with hand painting

Home / glossary / Edition variable reduction woodcut with hand painting

A relief print made from a block of wood. Sharp tools are used to cut away areas of the wooden surface to create the design. Each part of the woodblock is then intricately inked by hand using rollers. Paper is laid on top of the block and the image is transferred onto the paper, either using a press or by hand pressure. The colours and tones vary across the edition, making each impression unique. The artist finishes each impression by hand-painting specific areas of the image.
