Etching with Japanese Hosokawa paper chine collé

Home / glossary / Etching with Japanese Hosokawa paper chine collé

An intaglio technique whereby patterned fabric is exposed directly to the etching plate, which has been pre-coated with a thin layer of light-sensitised polymer. When developed or ‘etched’ with water, a shallow image is produced on the plate with a tonal range. Once inked-up, the plate is rolled through an etching press and the image is transferred onto paper.

Chine collé is a printing technique in which a sheet of fine paper (in this case handmade Japanese Hosokawa paper) is applied to the etching plate and then rolled through the printing press to embed it within the image, adding texture, tone and depth.
