For over 30 years, artist duo Jake and Dinos Chapman have been creating deliberately disturbing sculptures, installations and prints embodying the bleakest possible view of contemporary politics, religion and morals. In a similar vein, the Chapmans’ book Bedtime Tales for Sleepless Nights, published in 2013, draws on the ruthless European tradition of Struwwelpeter to produce shocking images and brooding texts subverting Victorian bedtime tales with savage glee. “Malice shall come to wreck the night, to cleave its comfort and impugn your delight,” is just one of the chilling texts to be found in the book. This colour etching, from a series of illustrations originally created for the book, provides an intentionally horrific expression of the book’s dark intentions.
