Martin Parr

In a career of nearly 50 years, Martin Parr (b. 1952) is now internationally recognised as Britain’s leading documentary photographer, noted for his depictions of apparently everyday scenes and people which nevertheless have complex undertones. Parr’s richly coloured and detailed images offer an unsparing but far from unsympathetic view of his subjects: in his own words, “I make serious photographs disguised as entertainment.” At the heart of his work is a tension between appearance and a deeper context which is deliberately unemphasised, but “If you want to read it you can read it.” Parr’s photography has appeared in exhibitions around the world, including a major solo exhibition, Only Human, at the National Portrait Gallery, London, and a full Retrospective at NRW-Forum Kultur und Wirtschaft, Düsseldorf, Germany, both in 2019.
