Dark Woods is a rendition of Tom Hammick’s similarly titled woodcut Dark Woods of England. The reduced scale of the etching, however, allowed Hammick “to economise on both colour and mark. Here it’s as if a lilac mist is rising from a waterlogged foreground. The figures without detail are more spectral and have appeared from the depths of the forest.” The etching in this way accentuates the haziness of the mist and blurred visibility of the vegetation, against which the figures appear illuminated.
