Nicolas Party

Nicolas Party (b. 1980) is a New York and Brussels-based multidisciplinary artist whose practice reworks familiar genres, such as portrait, landscapes and still lifes, into new playful languages. His works are primarily created in soft pastel, an idiosyncratic choice of medium and one that allows for intensity and fluidity in his depictions of objects both natural and manmade. His visual language has coalesced in an array of fantastical characters and motifs where perspective is heightened to uncanny effect. Points of reference in his work include celebrated 19th-century Swiss artists Félix Vallotton, Ferdinand Hodler, and Hans Emmenegger. In addition to paintings and pastel drawings, Party creates public murals, pietra dura, ceramics, installation works, and sculptures, including major commissions for the Dallas Museum of Art and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, USA. Party’s work has been exhibited internationally, including recent solo exhibitions at Hauser & Wirth, Hong Kong, KARMA, New York, Poldi Pezzoli Museum, Italy, and Kunsthalle Marcel Duchamp, Switzerland.
