Rachel Howard

Rachel Howard (b. 1969) is a British painter whose process grapples with notions of uncertainty, fragility, beauty and violence. Known for both her figurative and abstract work, Howard views the two styles as equal and mutually informing, rejecting any formal hierarchy. She seamlessly traverses between traditional materials and techniques to more unorthodox processes and media.

Howard graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London, in 1991. Since then her work has been exhibited extensively. Selected solo institutional exhibitions include Harvest at 447 Space, New York, USA (2026); Paintings of Violence at MASS MoCA, Massachusetts, USA (2018-19) and Museo MACRO, Rome, Italy (2016); At Sea at Hastings Contemporary, Hastings, UK (2015); Repetition is Truth – Via Dolorosa at Museo MADRE, Naples, Italy and Newport Street Gallery, London, UK (2018); and Guilty (2003) and Fiction Fear Fact (2007) at the Bohen Foundation, New York, USA. Upcoming: Noise at Pallant House, Print Room, Chichester, UK, with Frank Auerbach (2026-27).

Howard’s work is held in many institutional collections worldwide including Arts Council Collection, Imperial War Museum, Jerwood Collection, Hiscox, Pallant House, Murderme and The David Roberts Art Foundation, UK, as well as the Goss-Michael Foundation, Dallas, Ackland Art Museum, North Carolina, Wieland Collection, Atlanta and Tia Collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. Her work also features in European collections including SMEG Collection, Italy, Museum van Loon, Amsterdam, Netherlands, Olbricht Collection, Berlin, Germany, Black Flag Collection, Belgium and Pio Monte Della Misericordia, Naples, Italy, among others.
