Lithograph means ‘stone drawing’, although metal plates can also be used. An image is drawn using an oil-based ink onto a stone, which is then chemically fixed with a weak acid solution and gum arabic. The stone is then flooded with water, which is repelled by the ink. An oil-based ink is rolled onto the stone, which in turn is repelled by the damp area and adheres only to the ink drawing. The inked image is then transferred to paper using a press. Colour pigments are a added by hand to this edition after printing, making each work unique across the small edition of 5.
