The World Turned Upside Down presents a row of houses mirrored in a pool of floodwater, creating a disorienting landscape whose subject appears to be “buried upside down”. Shaw muses: “The everyday can look very different depending on where you stand in the landscape; what looks stable can turn unstable at the flick of the wrist, what is day can turn to night in the snap of the fingers and what is real can turn into an image in the blink of an eye.” George Shaw’s paintings and prints centre on his depictions of the post-war suburb he grew up in in Coventry, UK, infusing the sombre quality of everyday places with a distinct sense of nostalgia.
