ACE, a new edition by Harland Miller, is taken from the painting of the same title, first shown in the artist’s 2017 solo show at White Cube, London, where Miller introduced his series Letter Paintings. Unlike Miller’s book cover series, which work around the idea of ‘the title’, the Letter Paintings are paintings of words – single short words or acronyms made up of only two, three or four letters. These letters then appear overlaid on the canvas in a format inspired by the illuminated letters of medieval manuscripts, a form to which Miller brings a Pop Art sensibility that aims to combine and celebrate both the sacred and the everyday – or the humdrum nature of words such as If, Bi and Up.
