Happiness: The Case Against
Harland Miller (b. 1964) is a British artist and writer. He studied at Chelsea School of Art, London, UK, graduating in 1988, since when his work has included paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media pieces with influences as disparate as Edgar Allan Poe, Ernest Hemingway, Ed Ruscha, Mark Rothko, Anselm Kiefer, and Robert Rauschenberg. Drawing on diverse cultural references from classic literature to medieval illuminated manuscripts, Miller’s work uses a hybrid language of colour, typography and composition, infused with his signature humour. Recent solo exhibitions include those at Blain Southern in Berlin (2016), White Cube Hong Kong (2019), White Cube Bermondsey London (2022), White Cube Palm Beach (2023) and major museum shows at York Art Gallery, UK (2020 and 2025) and the Design Museum, London, UK (2025-26).
